Saigon - Vung Tau: A Journey of Connection Between the Bustling City and the Open Sea

Saigon - Vung Tau: A Journey of Connection Between the Bustling City and the Open Sea

Ladies and gentlemen, many of you may have first heard about Vietnam through films and stories – a land that is at once vibrant and peaceful, steeped in history yet reaching boldly toward the future. Today, we are about to create our very own story, a truly unique journey where you will experience two contrasting, yet beautifully harmonized destinations: the dazzling metropolis of Saigon and the serene coastal city of Vung Tau.

Before we set off on this adventure, allow me to share a little about the place where our journey begins. The city you are about to explore carries a name rich in history: Saigon.

Saigon – Once the “Pearl of the Far East”

“Saigon” is the beloved name that Vietnamese people often use when referring to today’s Ho Chi Minh City. This name recalls a golden age, when the city was once honored as the “Pearl of the Far East.” During the French colonial era, it served as the administrative hub of Cochinchina, and the French left behind grand architectural landmarks that still stand today, such as the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office.

Throughout its turbulent history, Saigon has witnessed heroic struggles for independence. From a French colonial city, it transformed into a metropolis proudly bearing the name of our great leader, President Ho Chi Minh. Today, Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest economic, cultural, and educational center, with a dynamic rhythm of life that never seems to rest. Here, the past and present exist side by side: modern skyscrapers rise above traditional markets, bustling streets intertwine with quiet little alleys, creating a city full of contrasts and charm.

Vung Tau – The Peaceful Seaside City

Leaving behind Saigon’s bustling energy, we will make our way to another destination with its own fascinating history: Vung Tau. Located about 100 kilometers southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau is a picturesque coastal town that was once a favorite retreat for French officials and emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty.

The name “Vung Tau” originates from its geography, as the area features several sheltered bays, or “vung,” where ships could safely anchor. Today, Vung Tau is not only famous for its pristine beaches but also stands as a cultural and spiritual landmark. One of its most iconic attractions is Tao Phung Mount, home to the towering Christ the King statue and the historic lighthouse, both offering panoramic views of the city and the glittering bay below.
